Rewind to summer 2019, when I was visiting my boyfriend over in Rotterdam. My journey from Bangkok wouldn’t end there as we decided to hit the road in grand fashion, taking a trip around Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg. While in Germany, he’d mentioned he knew Cologne quite well. The bustling and trendy city center was something he insisted I see, along with the biggest gothic cathedral in the world.
From Luxembourg, we headed to Cologne where we entered the 25 Hours Hotel The Circle. The limited parking didn’t phase us. We found parking at another building in front of it for a mere 20 euros. When we walked into the lobby, complete with a slatted circular display above the desk, the check-in staff was incredible. We got a free upgrade to a bigger room with a view of Cologne Cathedral!
Let’s go back to the design a bit. It’s a funky futuristic setting in the Friesenviertel District. Spacious main areas reflect the vibe of the youth of the city, playful and charismatic. The rooms echo this sentiment with imaginative concepts that beg to be discovered.
We booked a "Large" room with modernist details like a bowl sink and backlit circular mirror. It was comfortable yet sleek with an interesting design that revealed the bed from the bathroom through the slatted wall. We appreciated the welcome gift of differently colored sock pairs that had the same playful vibe as the hotel, the sleeping mask that said, “Don’t you dare,” and an array of stickers and postcards adorned with cool quotes.
All interior items have been designed exclusively for the hotel.
There’s no closet to speak of, though there are stylish hangers to let your wardrobe hang free and ready for you when it’s time to change.
The onsite restaurant, Neni, offers a garden retreat setting with hanging plants over the tables that give an earthy vibe. Boldly contrasting with the brightly-painted chairs, the floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate the place with sunshine. Neni is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, creating a cool cafe vibe that even locals want to enjoy. The service is top-notch too!

Fancy a bit more sunshine? There’s also outdoor seating. But the best part? Champagne at no extra charge! The food was fantastic too. They serve all different kinds of eggs, even Shakshuka, an Israeli-style egg dish where the eggs are poached in a vibrant tomato sauce. We also adored the 3 different types of hummus – beet, turmeric, and classic.
In the evenings, head back to that wild lobby which doubles as a dance floor. There’s a DJ playing fresh beats and the little typing machines make for a bit of special fun, especially after a few cocktails.
On the ground floor of the 25hours Hotel you can sit and listen to the authentic sounds of vinyl in their Record Store.
With 25 Hours Hotel in Cologne, it was all those little unique yet thoughtful touches that made our experience so memorable. The friendliness of the staff from hotel through restaurant, the cool designs, the youthful and energetic vibe…it all played into making it something we’ll always remember.
